Animal care in Greece
Many people from the UK enjoy great holidays in Greece each year, and those that do will be very aware about the number of stay dogs and cats that there are.
I will not dwell upon the issues there are with animal cruelty in Greece, it will take too long as the purpose of this mail is to highlight to all caring pet owners the horrendous situation that occurred in the small fishing town of Gythio last week.

Some ex-pats set up a home for strays, animals are cared for and homes found either in Greece, Germany or Holland (mostly).

The letter I have copied below is self explanatory, I hope, like me you will after reading it make the time to E-Mail the local Mayor to support the tracking down of these mindless citizens.....

28 Dogs poisoned in Gythio
by aloni ยป Sat Oct 01, 2011 1:59 pm

Today I received a sad email from the kind people who run the Melios Animal Shelter in Gythio. Somebody went onto their premises twice this week and poisoned 28 of the dogs they had rescued and were caring for. As you can imagine they were devastated to see their poor dogs lying dead.

They do a valuable job, with very little money (like our local animal welfare organisation, KAWs) to help the abandoned, often badly treated animals they rescue.

They are appealing to the Mayor of Gythio to help and support them to stop such acts of cruelty to animals and to help them raise funds to carry on. They have asked as many people as possible to email the Mayor to ask him to help their cause.

It would be a big help if anyone here who is, as I was, shocked by this could write to the mayor in support of Melios Animal Shelter. His email address is: mkoliakou@1315.syzefxis.gov.gr
Your support would be very much appreciated by the Melios team, Vasiliki, Litsa, Jenny, Judi, Jolly, Mali, Henia and Els.

RE: Animal care in Greece
I am not sure if anyone from this cam board did bother to E mail the mayor of Gythio in Greece, but certainly on the cam boards here in Greece there was a lot of action.

To update you, it had the desired effect. The Mayor responded to all the E-Mails he received (to my knowledge), donated monies to the cause and has given the organisation some land near the town to continue there work on.

Some things DO work !
