Cat Toys - Keeping your cat occupied
Cats are extremely resourceful at entertaining themselves, but if yours is getting into things that you do not want her to, it may be time for some cat toys.

One of the most important cat toys is a scratching post. These are sturdy pieces of wood covered in very dense carpeting. Some of them have toys hanging off of them or places for your cat to lounge. You can make your own by covering a 4x4 with carpet or you can buy one. They come in all price ranges and many decorating schemes. You do not have to sacrifice style for your cat. Like all pet products, you can spend a small fortune on a scratching post. How much you spend is up to you.

Your cat needs a den, a crate. This is not really a toy but it is a psychological need. By providing a retreat that is solely your cats, you provide her with a sense of safety.

Your cat will like hunting toys. These are toys that allow her to pretend that she is a great huntress of the wild. You can find some cheap ones at a grocery store, others at pet stores and high end ones at boutiques. If you want to make one, let your imagination run wild. Hang a bell and tassel from a piece of yard. Stuff a treat inside of a waffle ball. Roll a ball of yarn along the floor. Buy a finch. Open the shades and let your cat watch the world.

Cats love to climb and some people indulge this tendency by making trails along their walls for the cats to go up high. These can be both inexpensive and beautiful. To make one, you will need wood stain, moulding, shelf supports and 2x8’s. Use short lengths of board to make either a stair without risers or a ramp. A stair without risers is the most decorative. Then longer pieces of board can go around the room to give your cat room to roam up high. Since cats are natural tree dwellers, they will enjoy the view. Use the moulding along the edges to give a very decorative touch. With a little planning your room will look great. To plan, take a picture of each wall where your cat run will go. Now, paste that image into Publisher or a Paint program. Use dark lines to plan your run. You can use a CAD program for this, but that is overkill. Once you have an idea, you are ready to spend a weekend on this project. Then, when people come over, your cat can be part of your décor.

Cats can provide a fun opportunity to use, or find, your creativity. With a little ingenuity, you will find life with your cat peaceful and pleasant.

Cool article and is very useful for new cat owners!

I find that the catnip toys are often the most popular!

RE: Cat Toys - Keeping your cat occupied
I have purchased many toys for my cats and found they don't like catnip toys instead they like:

- their kitty condo
- mouse toys
- laser beam
- strings
- a ball made from aluminum foil or the foil from a candybar
- honeysuckle toys

Found out they don't like regular balls but only play with the aluminum and they love all sorts of strings!
