Getting Harry to STAY

Hello I am new here and wonder if anyone can help. I have a year old cocker spaniel/labby cross (more spaniel than Lab) and I have taught him to sit, give his paw and to lay down. The only thing he wont do is to stay. Also when he is off lead and there are other dogs around he decides whether or not to come when he is called Confused If there are no dogs around, he will come.

Has anyone got any suggestions to getting him to stay and then to come back when called ?

He is a lovely dog and very affectionate. Harry is the first dog I have ever had I have always had cats. I currently have 3 cats, the eldest of w hich bosses him about, the youngest one (9 years) puts up with him and the other cat (10) Harry is rather wary of!

Look forward to hearing from you

Tongue
Hi Im new here too.I have 3 dogs and my eldest was easy to train, he does lots of things, sit, stay, wait, down, get the phone, gently(thats incase he snatches a treat lol), kiss and even shut the door but the only way he will come back to me is if he thinks Im leaving him and I say bye, even that doesnt always work. I know that doesnt really help you but at least you know youre not alone lol.I also have two pups and they are a lot harder to train so far. My vet tells me the youngest of the two pups is very intelligent but is very manipulative and lazy so I have to just keep training and not allow him to go off and do what what he wants, not an easy task with him believe me,lol.

Well tell him " Stay " and then hold him so he cant move, then give him his favorite food, do that around 15times and he will learn in days, maybe hours depending on your dog.

I am an owner of 5cats and I heard cats is harder to train than dogs, well what I do is tell him " Stay " and hold him so he can't move, and give him his favorite food.
