How to stop furniture scratching?
I have a cat that likes to sharpen her claws on my couch. Now with the couch I have now I would not mind so much it is pretty old but, I am getting ready to buy a new living room set so am hoping someone has some advice to share. (I do not believe in de-clawing a cat though)

Have you tried getting a scratching post or a toy like TurboScratcher that the cat can use? If that does not work, another option is replaceable vinyl claw caps: http://www.SoftPaws.com. I have used them, my cats did not even know they were wearing anything. They could extent & retract claws, no discomfort of any kind.

Yes start with a scratching post and rub catnip on it. I have also heard that if you put hot pepper and water mixture onto the spots the cat scratches- they will stop scratching. I'm not sure how well this would work on furniture though.
They also sell those plastic like (clear) products to put on your furniture- to protect it.

Mine stopped as soon as I got a scratching post and have had no more problems since.

I will have to pick them up a scratching post and some catnip it sounds like. I know I had seen them around but I have never had one so it is definitely worth a shot. Thank you guys for that advice. Anyone know if the claw covers would help with this too?

The claw covers would work wonderfully! They cover the cat's claw so no sharp edge at all. Check them out! I think someone up above has given the link to the site that sells them.
