Spondylosis - Advise needed!
Hi! I have a springer spaniel cross who has had a condition for nearly 3 years now where he is destroying his own red blood cells and that has meant he has been on a low dose of steriods now for that length of time. The vet has tried to change the dose of steriods many times, at the start they wanted to get him off them eventually but now they say that isn't possible. The problem now is that his back legs have been gradually getting worse over the past 6-9 months to the point where he now cannot go up and down the stairs, won't go out for a walk and randomly falls down now as his legs will give way on him. The vet thinks that he may have spondylosis and has tried him on tramadol, but that had no effect and has now said he doesn't think that there is much more that he can do. I am really loathed to make the decision to have him put to sleep yet as he is a very happy dog, apart from this, he doosn't appear to be in pain but am not sure what I can do to make his quality of life better. i have read up on the steroids and it seems that long term use of these can lead to muscle wastage, and I am wondering whether this a cause.
can anyone help?
Thanks

RE: Spondylosis - Advise needed!
I don't know anything about Spondylosis, but if he still has control of his bladder etc. I would try getting him some wheels. I've personally known two dogs use them, one being a huuuge GSD who couldn't use her back legs at all, and it made such a difference to her. She could race around the beach again with her 4 brothers, she was so happy.
The other is a little yorkie cross, who has a balance problem, so she's basically got stabilizers Big Grin
If you do a google search for dog wheels you should find a few different sites.
Here is one I found, which tells you more about them.
