The "Face" Harness
I have seen these harnesses used with dogs who are unruly while walking. It not only has the regular collar but also has a strap that goes around his muzzle. Any time the dog tries to pull away, the muzzle piece turns his head back, teaching him to remain within close proximity to his owner.

Has anyone used one of these?

I never have used one but I definitely could. My dog is rather well behaved ...until... I take her for a walk. Then she pulls away and drags me along rarely going where she should.

If a dog is agressive I would say that would be the thing to do, but not for well behaved ones.

These are awful, and can even make the most kind and wonderful dogs look like vicious baby eaters. Not to mention, they cannot be comfortable for a dog to wear.

RE: The "Face" Harness
I have got one of these for my dog, as he is large and a lot stronger than me, he used to be horrible to take for a walk because of his pulling and yanking as soon as i started using the face harness he calmed down immediately and i can walk him anywhere.

I no longer have to use the face harness anymore after i was using it for about 3 months.

I recommend it for anyone having problems walking their dog.

I haven't seen them and I don't have one. So it doesn't hurt them- it's just more protection and better control for you to have over your dog?

RE: The "Face" Harness
The "face harness" as you are calling it is just a head collar, like they use on horses. There are the Halti kind, or the simpler Gentle leader. It simply guides the dogs head, and the body follows. They do not hurt or bother the dog once it is used to it, and it is loose around the dogs muzzle when they are not pulling. They are great for training dogs who like to pull.

Wink RE: The "Face" Harness
Hi All,

I've got a Gentle Leader for my German Shepherd who sometimes pulls when see see's a dog that she knows, its easier for my Wife who is smaller than me. Now that Bella's older she doesn't pull anymore but its nice to have something that see's comfortable wearing.
Hope this helps.

RE: The "Face" Harness
For my dog, being the way he is, (very overly-aggressive) his headcollar is invaluable to me. He isn't a puller, but he is a launcher, and the headcollar allows me more control of where his head is going! (I have a harness on him also, because he really can be extreme.) I'm not a weakling and I'm not an incapable dog handler, but in some cases, especially with extreme/unpredictable dogs, I personally think that headcollars/harnesses are a sensible aid.

I think when it comes to dog-walking, being able to control your dog should be your number one priority. Fitting a headcollar on a strong dog while it is learning how to walk properly will keep both the dog and the handler safe. The dog safe from being dropped and running out onto a main road and ending up dead under a car, and the handler safe from being dragged off his/her feet and being injured.

Headcollars are only meant to be a temporary aid to help you during the training process. If they're used without additional training they are not solving the problem behaviour, merely making it easier to deal with, which is no good in the long run. It's important to remember that.
